Pullen Arts Center to Host Book-A-Week Display
The Book-A-Week 2012 reception will be held from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Jan. 17 at Pullen Arts Center, the City of Raleigh Arts Commission has announced. Attendees can meet local book artists Jennifer Lee Mahaffey and Kathy Steinsberger and see each of their 52 book creations for the year 2012. The artists made one book per week during the year.
“The Book-A-Week Challenge encourages our artists to push their boundaries and ideas as book artists,” said Betty McKim, assistant director of Pullen Arts Center. “It is an opportunity to stretch new creative ideas for bookmaking motivated by the ever-present march of the calendar.”
The books by Ms. Mahaffey and Ms. Steinsberger are of all shapes, sizes and materials. From pear-shaped to sculptural folds, small to large and recycled materials to woven fibers, the two artists stretch the imagination of what a book can be as a carrier of ideas and a work of art.
Both book artists will be available to talk about the process of making the books, the idea behind the Book-A-Week Challenge, and the variety of books they created. All of the books will be available in a “hands-on” display – for perusal and questions. The books will be on display through Jan. 31 at Pullen Arts Center during regular business hours.
The Jan. 17 reception is free and open to the public.
Pullen Arts Center is located at 105 Pullen Road near North Carolina State University’s Belltower. For more information, contact Pullen Arts Center at 919-996-6126 or email eliza.kiser@raleighnc.gov or betty.mckim@raleighnc.gov
