House Creek Greenway Trail Dedication
The City of Raleigh Parks and Recreation Department will dedicate the House Creek Greenway Trail on September 24th at 4pm. The trail is approximately 2.9 miles in length and extends from the eastern end of the pedestrian bridge over I-440 to Crabtree Creek Trail at the intersection of Blue Ridge Road and Crabtree Valley Boulevard. In addition, a connector from the intersection of Wade Avenue and Ridge Road is currently under construction and when completed will provide access to residents of this area and will include two pedestrian underpasses beneath Lake Boone Trail and Glen Eden Drive.
The Capital Area Greenway System was a concept first envisioned in the early 1970’s. Early proponents of the greenway system developed a pilot greenway trail along House Creek. Later that year the City Council approved the first greenway commission. The original pilot House Creek Trail no longer exists but the dedication of the House Creek Greenway is a representation of moving from ‘Concept to Reality.’ Numerous Landscape Architectural professionals have provided guidance in the development of the Capital Area Greenway System over the last 40 years. During the dedication ceremony, the American Society of Landscape Architects will acknowledge and honor the landscape architecture profession, the importance and impact on greenway design, and the subsequent benefit to the community.
Following the dedication there will be an Art and Community Service Expo held in the Glen Eden Center from 4-7pm, featuring displays and information tables on a variety of topics from recycling to pedestrian safety.
The purpose of Raleigh Parks and Recreation Department is to actively, encourage, provide, promote, and protect quality leisure, recreation and cultural opportunities, facilities and environments that are essential for the enhancement of the lives of our citizens.
