Curator Georges Le Chevallier to Speak at Municipal Building’s

Art Gallery Aug. 23

Curator Georges Le Chevallier will appear at a free curator’s talk on Thursday, Aug. 23 from 12:30 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. at the Miriam Preston Block Art Gallery in the Avery C. Upchurch Government Complex, 222 West Hargett St. Mr. Le Chevallier is the guest curator for the “4 x 24” exhibit at the art gallery. Attendees are welcome to bring lunch.

Mr. Le Chevallier will convene the talk on the second floor of the art gallery, just outside the Raleigh City Council chamber. He will discuss his thoughts on the changing nature of photography and the talented group of artists chosen for the “4 x 24” exhibit.

The “4 x 24” exhibit, sponsored by the City of Raleigh Arts Commission, features digital photography by Gerri Fernandez, Adam Hajnos, Julian Thomas and Nathan Wellman. Their work showcases how these young artists are "part of a new generation of young photographers who have swapped the use of chemicals and long hours of work in a darkroom for the immediate gratification of Photoshop on a computer screen," typifying the changing nature of photography, Mr. Le Chevallier said.

Mr. Le Chevallier received his masters of fine arts degree in painting from Hunter College in New York City. He has curated and organized many successful exhibitions and projects, including Visual Art Exchange’s 2011 “Collector’s Print Portfolio.” Currently, he is a professor at the Living Arts College in Raleigh and the director of Bloc Projects, a curatorial and art consulting organization. Bloc Projects strives to bring attention to current issues and ideas by creating an atmosphere of open dialogue through site-specific and traveling visual art exhibitions, installations, performances, residencies and productions.

Established in 1977 as the official advisory body and advocate for the arts to the Raleigh City Council, the City of Raleigh Arts Commission holds the distinction of being the first municipal arts commission created in North Carolina. Serving as the leading force to champion the arts with Raleigh citizens and their representatives, the Arts Commission’s myriad activities foster, support and promote the arts in the Capital City.
