Approval Given to Capital Boulevard Corridor Study

 

The Raleigh City Council voted unanimously today to adopt the Capital Boulevard Corridor Study. The study, developed with significant input from the public, outlines recommendations for transforming the most traveled gateway into Downtown into a showcase for multimodal transportation and green infrastructure.

 

The City Council’s Comprehensive Planning Committee reviewed the summary report of the study and recommended adoption with some amendments. These amendments strengthen the report’s recommendations for the southern part of the study area.

 

The study presents a vision and strategy for the revitalization, redevelopment, and renewal of Capital Boulevard from Downtown to Interstate 440. The effort was led by City of Raleigh Department of Planning and Development staff in consultation with an intergovernmental working group of County and State agencies, assisted by the pro-bono consulting services of Kimley-Horn and Associates, CDM Smith, DHM Design, and J Davis Architects.

 

The overall focus of the Capital Boulevard Corridor Study is on transportation, water quality, flood mitigation, park and greenway infrastructure and land use. The study results confirm that Capital Boulevard, as the primary gateway to the City core, offers compelling opportunities for economic development, environmental restoration, open space and recreation, and multimodal mobility.

 

The study is organized around seven vision themes. Each specific recommendation and project in the plan implements one or more of these themes. The seven themes are: Happy Motoring, Transitioning to Transit, Moving without Fossil Fuels, Greening the Infrastructure, At Home on Capital Boulevard, Business and Industry, and A Gateway Transformed.
