Recycle and Win! is Back - Bigger and Better

RWPrizePatrol     Coca-Cola and Harris Teeter are once again partnering with the City of Raleigh to make recycling a rewarding experience. This incentive campaign is designed to increase participation and educate residents on the proper materials to recycle. Residents were mailed a packet containing instructions and decals to be applied to their recycling bin/cart the last week in April. To participate the "give it back" decal must be applied to the recycling container so that it is visible from the street. The "Yes" decal is a graphic showing the acceptable materials for recycling. The "Yes" decal should be applied to the recycling container for handy reference. The Prize Patrol will be searching for residents who are recycling and including only the accepted materials. Ten winners will be randomly selected each week and will each be eligible to win a $50 gift card from Harris Teeter. The program will run until Oct. 31, 2012.

So what's "bigger and better" about this round of the program? The bigger part is the fact that all Raleigh households are being transitioned from small 18 gallon recycling bins to 95 gallon roll carts providing greater capacity to recycle more. The better part is that Raleigh Recycling has added new materials since the original Recycle & Win! campaign. Raleigh residents can now include all plastic containers except #6, colored paper, telephone books and paper spiral cans in their recycling container. Raleigh Recycling has created a video about Recycle & Win - Bigger & Better! To view this 4 minute video check http://raleigh.granicus.com/MediaPlayer.php?view_id=24&clip_id=2314. My Raleigh Subscriptions

MyRaleigh Subscriptions is a new system for communicating with residents by email and text message. It is a convenient, easy-to-use service that allows residents to sign up for news and announcements on more than 100 topics via email or text message. Users are able to manage their own account information, including updating their email addresses.

All previous subscribers to Solid Waste Services and Raleigh Recycling emails have be transferred over to the MyRaleigh Subscriptions system. The new system allows subscribers to be selective in the exact emails they want to receive and even the frequency such as immediate, daily or a weekly digest. The new sections under Solid Waste Services include Service and Holiday Alerts (you can even select based on your service day so you'll only get emails that affect your collection!), New and Events, Central Business District, Recycling Block Leaders, and Waste Reduction Tips. We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to refine your email choices so you will only be sent the ones you want. The service is available at www.raleighnc.gov.

Opt Out of Unwanted Phone Books!

Opt-Out of Telephone Books

www.yellowpagesoptout.com features all Yellowbook titles available plus all the other major phone book publishers in the industry.  They realize that not everyone uses a printed phone book, so this quick and easy website will allow residents to choose what directories they want to receive, and which ones they don't.

NOTE: Telephone books are now included in all Raleigh Recycling programs. Residents may now recycle them in their bin/cart at home or any of the city's recycling drop off centers. Always remove them from plastic bags/wrappers and recycle the plastic film at your grocery store.

International Compost Week

Composting at home is easy.

May 6 - May 12, 2012 is International Compost Week.  Did you know that about 15% of garbage disposed of in landfills is comprised of food waste - or that approximately 4-10% of all the food you purchase becomes waste? Instead of throwing food waste in the garbage you might consider composting. We've got web pages on how to compost at home for the single family household as well as Vermicomposting  for residents who don't have a backyard or space for a traditional compost bin/pile. Check them out!

Next Recycling Facility Tour

Recycling tours are a great way to learn what happens to materials.

The date for the next quarterly recycling facility tour has been set for July 12, 2012. If you've ever wondered what happens to all the materials in your recycling bin or cart, this is a chance to see it up close. Find out more about the tour on our web page or contact Community Education Specialist Bianca Howard at 919.996.6872 or bianca.howard@raleighnc.gov.
