The City is working diligently to improve connectivity and accessibility for residents. We have several transportation projects in the design phase. During this phase, we finalize plans before entering the construction phase.
Barwell Road Improvement Project

The City is widening Barwell Road from Rock Quarry Road to Berkeley Lake Road. We want to ensure Barwell Road is safe and accessible for all modes of transportation. Some of the improvements include new sidewalks, a multi-use path, and designated two-way left turn lanes.
Barwell Road is home to Barwell Road Elementary School and Community Center complex. These improvements will help improve pedestrian and bicycle accessibility in the area.
Carolina Pines Avenue Improvement Project

The purpose of this project is to improve mobility and connectivity for pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicular traffic. We are making changes to Carolina Pines Avenue from Lake Wheeler Road to South Saunders Street.
Improvements include consolidated transit stops; sidewalk on the north side of the street; multi-use path on the south side of the street; roundabouts, and other elements like stormwater control.

The City is proposing several improvements to Lake Wheeler Road from South Saunders Street to Maywood Avenue. One of the major changes is converting the current two-lane road (with no pedestrian or bike facilities) into a Complete Street.
Other improvements include a peanut roundabout at Mercury and Good Streets; shared paths; bike lanes; sidewalks; raised intersections, and bike-only facilities.
Construction crews are actively working on the following projects. Please adhere to any work zone flags or instructions. These projects are later in the construction phase and are expected be completed Fall 2024.
Poole Road Widening Project

As part of the Capital Improvement Program, we are working to improve Poole Road, from Maybrook Drive to Barwell Road. Construction crews are widening the roadway to a four-lane complete street with a median, sidewalks, and bicycle facilities. The multi-use paths and sidewalks provide cyclists and pedestrians with a safer experience.
Scotland Street Improvement Project

We are making improvements to Scotland Street, between Lakeview Drive and Lassiter Mill Road. Improvements include installing storm drain boxes; curb and gutter; ADA compliant curb ramps; a retaining wall; sidewalks; and bus pads just to name a few. The City is committed to making Raleigh Streets safe and accessible for bicyclists, pedestrians, and vehicular traffic.
We call these Complete Streets.
