From Newspaper Kiosks to Art

Fayetteville Street just got a fresh upgrade with four new art-wrapped kiosks designed by local artists! This project began in 2021 with an artist call to display original artwork on vacant newspaper kiosks that are located along Fayetteville Street. The artwork displays are a program of the City of Raleigh Department of Transportation, in partnership with the Office of Special Events and Raleigh Arts.

Portraits Featured at Oberlin Library 

Portraits of 15 Oberlin Village community members have been installed on the exterior of the Oberlin Regional Library. The portraits are part of Voices of Oberlin, the latest exhibition on display at Block Gallery located inside the Raleigh Municipal Building. Photographed by Derrick Beasley, the exhibition explores the memories of Oberlin community members through  portraiture and oral histories

Community Conversations

Join artist Kenseth Armstead and Director of the Visual Art Exchange Kayla Coleman for a free conversation around the potential for public art to illuminate dialogue within and between communities. Following the conversation is a workshop led by Kenseth where artists will learn how to strengthen their concept development, proposal structure and will be provided with resources for finding and applying for temporary and permanent public art opportunities.

Noir Bizzare's IHaveADreamPop! Festival

Supported by SEEK Raleigh, our experimental public art program, and VAE Raleigh is Noir Bizarre, an event by Daniel Chavis of The Veldt! The free two-day event will feature live music, vendors, and DJ sets on September 8 and 9 at VAE Raleigh. Daniel Chavis describes the event as an opportunity to include everyone "strange and black" regardless of their background or sexual orientation, "offering something between Hillbillies and Hip Hop."

A new mural by Calvin Ulrich has been added to a sewer riser on the Shelley Lake greenway trail. This project is a collaboration between Raleigh Arts and Raleigh Waters and showcases Shelley Lake Park, home to Sertoma Arts Center, as an arts destination while highlighting the importance of well maintained sewers.
