Crabtree Creek West Greenway Trail is Under Construction!
The Crabtree Creek West Trail is the remaining trail section of the Crabtree Creek Greenway corridor and will extend from the existing terminus at Lindsay Drive to the eastern boundary of Umstead State Park on Ebenezer Church Road. This proposed trail section is approximately two miles in length, includes 5 pedestrian bridges, and is a critical link in a regional greenway system. From a regional perspective, the completion of the Crabtree Creek West Trail project will connect the Neuse River Trail to the American Tobacco Trail. The project is funded by the 2014 Parks Bond Referendum, federal transportation funding through CAMPO’s Locally Administered Project program (LAPP), and Wake County Open Space Grant. The project is expected to be complete in the Fall of 2023. For more information, visit the project webpage.

New Greenway Trail Signage
The City of Raleigh’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department (PRCR) has designed and installed a new style of Greenway signage to improve a user’s awareness of what is nearby. These new signs provide more detailed information on distance to destinations and amenities, maps showing a trail user’s location along a specific trail and maps showing destinations and streets located within the immediate vicinity of a sign location. These new sign types provide distances to destinations in both mileage and anticipated travel time, whether moving on foot or bicycle.
The first of these signs have been installed along the Walnut Creek Trail at Water Works St and on the Walnut Creek Trail where it intersects with the Rocky Branch Trail. In the coming years, PRCR plans to install this new type of signage at strategic locations across the Capital Area Greenway System, improving user experience and safety.

Greenway Trail Counters
Greenway maintenance staff has installed 13 trail counters across the Capital Area Greenway system. These counters collect data on the number of trail users utilizing a specific section of trail and can also differentiate between cyclists and pedestrians as well as direction of travel. This information is transmitted wirelessly, through cellular networks, to our teams for analysis. The data is used to provide an understanding of how and when trails are used and help create maintenance schedules, justify trail improvements, support grant funding, and much more.
