City of Raleigh Hosts Affordable Housing Open House on August 6
The City of Raleigh will host an Affordable Housing Open House on Saturday, August 6 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at John Chavis Memorial Park.
Many factors impact housing affordability, such as construction costs and the overall supply of available homes. In Raleigh, rent costs have also increased over time, but household earnings have not kept up. As the City continues to grow, the gap is expected to widen, making it more difficult for residents to have an affordable, safe place to call home.
Finding innovative, accessible, and urgent solutions to affordable housing is a top priority for the City of Raleigh. The City offers various programs and funding to local organizations that support residents struggling to find an affordable place to live.
The open house, hosted by the City’s Housing and Neighborhoods Department, will provide information about housing programs and resources available in Raleigh. Residents will have the opportunity to ask staff questions, get connected to other services offered by community partners, and learn about topics related to affordable rental developments, homebuyer assistance, homeowner repairs, neighborhood revitalization, and small business development initiatives.
Because every person has different needs, a wide range of City service areas will be represented at the event, including Planning and Development, Raleigh Water, Solid Waste Services, Sustainability, Stormwater, Equity and Inclusion, Community Engagement, Transportation, and Parks.
Local nonprofit organizations and external agencies that provide homelessness and rapid rehousing, emergency shelter, and other public services will also be available. Organizations include Wake County Housing Affordability & Community Revitalization, Resources for Seniors, Evergreen Construction, NC Homeownership Assistance Fund, the Housing Justice Project with Campbell Law School, DHIC, Triangle Family Services, Passage Home, Southeast Raleigh Promise, and the Raleigh Area Land Trust.
The open house will also have information for contractors that are interested in working on City-funded housing rehabilitation projects. Staff will be on hand to answer questions and provide information about upcoming opportunities and how to register to do business with the City.
“The growing challenge of locating safe, affordable housing in our community is well-documented. The Affordable Housing Open House provides a wonderful forum to highlight the exceptional work that the City and its many partners are undertaking to address this pressing issue,” said Evan Raleigh, Assistant City Manager for the City of Raleigh.
“This event also affords the opportunity to educate residents that may be struggling to find housing or those that may be experiencing difficulty remaining in their homes on all the resources that are available to support them. It’s important that people from all walks of life have an opportunity to build a life in Raleigh and the ability to find housing they can afford is central to that.”
No registration is required to attend this free event. Kid-friendly activities will be available, including Saturday Morning Science and play areas. Light refreshments will be provided, and attendees can enter to win one of five free desktop computers provided by the Kramden Institute.
