Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin rescinds curfew

Effective immediately, I am rescinding the citywide curfew imposed Friday and Saturday nights.

I recognize the challenges that issuing a curfew can cause for many in our community. After seeing demonstrations turn violent and destructive late into the night last May, it was important to make sure we took every precaution to ensure our community’s safety and security. Issuing a curfew is never an easy decision. But it is important to provide a safe environment for those who want to protest peacefully, while still protecting our downtown residents and businesses from the threat of harm.

It is my hope that we can grow from the events of this summer and recognize that there is still much work to do. I was proud to join our faith community -- and so many others -- this weekend in a vigil shining a light for peace. From the Enloe High School seniors I met to the activists I spoke with, from the words of our clergy to the songs of inspiration -- it was an inspiring moment. Working together, collaborating, and listening, will lead us to a better understanding and a more just community.

More than 1,000 people came to downtown this weekend to peacefully and civilly exercise their constitutional rights to freedom of speech and assembly. While a small number sought to cause distractions -- and were held accountable -- the message of reform and justice is not lost or overlooked. These voices are needed in our community and we hear you. And we promise action and solutions.

I look forward to continuing our journey together to build a better Raleigh for all.
