Volunteer Spotlight: Church of the Earth

Photo of Church of the Earth volunteers

Thank you to Church of the Earth for volunteering with our Heavy Construction Crew at Lake Wheeler! This group came out on a rainy, Saturday morning to help add gravel around shelters to prevent further erosion around the cement pads. The group of 10 volunteers, we were able to move 65 tons of gravel! Thank you all for your hard work!

Native Species Spotlight: Poison Ivy

Photo collage of poison ivy

This month's feature is a well-known native with its own rhyme! "Leaves of 3, let it be"? Absolutely! Rhus toxicodendron is called poison ivy for a reason - the urushiol oils in the sap often cause allergic reactions - but it is also a beautiful, native plant. While not commercially available, its glossy, green leaves and fantastic fall color make it a very pretty staple of our Piedmont woodland habitats. Mammals (other than humans) graze on the foliage, the flowers are pollinated by bees, wasps and ants, and its berries are eaten by numerous species of birds and mammals, making this spectacular native an important plant for wildlife. For all of these reasons, it's time to rethink our negative attitude towards this lovely (if itchy) vine.
