Still [un]Still Andie Freeman and Kaidy Lewis June 12 – September 27, 2019 Artist Reception Friday, June 21, 2019 from 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm
“a painter can say all he wants to with fruits or flowers, or even clouds.”
~Edouard Manet, Modernist painter
The still life has endured a complicated evolution throughout the canon of art history. Once discarded as a feminine past time used as an exercise to build skills, still life painting was elevated during the Dutch Golden Age, and then rediscovered in the modernist paintings of the nineteenth century. The works of artists Andie Freeman and Kaidy Lewis look to honor and deviate from the tradition in Still [un]Still.
Mariam Aziza Stephan, Seasons For Ibrahim 2 Music by Mark Mallman June 5 through September 29, 2019 On view each evening at dusk and each First Friday
Stephan's constructed landscapes piece together fragmented scenes of conflict, abandonment, and disarray. Seasons For Ibrahim 2 is a meditation on change. This drawing-video landscape is a portrait of a relationship that is trying to find its place between two worlds. This piece is a testimonial to places that are constantly changing and undulating under the weight of history, paths, and identities. Each position, each face, needs to take turns making sacrifices so the other can grow.
Stephan believes the landscape speaks as a metaphor to the human condition and allows her to explore various thresholds encompassing both the physical and psychological. The health of the land speaks to the health of our future.
