Hillsborough Street, Phase II

Roadway Design and Construction is happy to report that the Hillsborough Street Project is substantially complete.

The City’s contractor, Pipeline Utilities, is working on a few punch list items and waiting for a couple of private utility companies to finish relocation work so that Duke Energy can pull the remaining distribution poles along the north side of the corridor. Once the poles are gone, crews will fill in the missing bricks in the sidewalk where the poles used to be. At that point, Pipeline Utilities' part of the project will be complete.

The two items that remain are the public art and the benches at the rain garden. The public art is scheduled for installation late this summer. And, the City is working with the designer on the best option for the benches at the rain garden. The City will install benches once they arrive.

The City will have a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday, August 25, during NC States’ annual Packapalooza festival. The City will post more information on the Hillsborough Street, Phase II website as the event draws near.

Mitchell Mill Road Widening Project:

The City’s contractor, Rifenburg Construction closed the northern section of Forestville Road at Mitchell Mill Road to traffic on June 22. The road closure is required while the contractor installs a large box culvert under the intersection.

Mitchell Mill Road remains open to traffic in both directions while the contractor completes this phase of the project, but the northern section of Forestville Road will not be accessible from Mitchell Mill Road through early August.

The City installed a job site camera at the intersection of Mitchell Mill and Forestville Road to document the installation of the culvert. The camera takes a picture every 15 minutes, and the public is invited to view the images.  https://www.senserasystems.com/public/project/MitchellMillCulvert

In mid July the contractor is scheduled to begin the final paving operations between Louisburg Road/401 and the Wake Cross Roads Baptist Church. The project is running on schedule and is projected to be complete by the end of the summer.

Traffic Calming Projects

Town & Country image

Traffic calming projects are projects that the Neighborhood Streetscape Program has passed onto our department for engineering services and construction management.

The goal of the Neighborhood Streetscape Program is to improve street safety for motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists while improving the living conditions for residents along a street. Treatments to the street enhance the appearance and slow down motor-vehicle traffic.

Currently, Roadway Design & construction is overseeing four traffic calming projects. Cross link Road and Currituck road are both in the design phase of the project, Milburnie Road, is scheduled to begin construction this fall, and Town and Country is currently under construction.

Staff Highlight:

Han Nguyen

The Roadway Design & Construction division welcomed a new engineer to our Petition Program staff this spring. Han Nguyen joined the team in February 2018.

Han was raised in Raleigh North Carolina, graduated from North Carolina State University with a BS degree focused in civil engineering and is a registered professional engineer. Previous work experience includes working in the public sector for five years, and the private sector for two years, before joining the City of Raleigh’s Roadway Design & Construction Division. Han decided to transition his career to the City of Raleigh because Raleigh is his home city and he wants to be part of the amazing growth that the City is going through.

In his free time, he enjoys jogging, having fun with his kids, doing things like playing tag and video games, and last but not least, spending time with his wife.

Have a great summer and remember to be safe in the work zones!
