March 2018 | Spring into Action
Spruce up your yard and save a few dollars with free biodegradable bags from the City of Raleigh. Solid Waste Services customers may pick up paper yard waste bags from the Wilders Grove Solid Waste Services Facility at 630 Beacon Lake Dr, Raleigh 27610. Limit five bags per person, while supplies last. Customers will be asked to show proof of Raleigh residency, such as a driver's license or utility bill.
This biodegradable bag giveaway is part of the 25th anniversary celebration of the City of Raleigh Yard Waste Center. Paper bags are the most efficient option for yard waste collection because they can be composted along with leaves and limbs. Look for biodegradable yard waste bags at your favorite hardware store.
 Celebrate Trashion on March 22
Mark your calendars for Thursday, March 22 to celebrate the 11th Annual City of Raleigh Environmental Awards. This year's party will include a "fashion stroll" featuring entries from the Trashion Design Competition. Designers accepted the challenge to rethink waste through the creation of wearable clothing made from items that would otherwise be discarded. Mingle with models while enjoying free food, and learn about Earth Month events. One to watch: the annual Technology of Trash, an official NC Science Festival event. Experience it on Friday, April 6, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

 Discard Properly at Drop-off Centers
Our three drop-off recycling centers provide a valuable option for Raleigh residents and small businesses. The centers are not for garbage, furniture or hazardous materials such as propane tanks. New signage has been installed at all three sites to help users learn where to properly dispose of mattresses and building materials. Please use our drop-off centers responsibly so that we can continue to enjoy them.
Raleigh's population has expanded dramatically over the last ten years, but the number of drop-off sites is at an all-time low. More sites are needed, especially in northwest and northeast Raleigh. Shopping centers, churches and nonprofit organizations have successfully partnered with us in the past. Email recycling@raleighnc.gov if you would like to discuss a potential partnership.
