Holiday Express

Holiday Express Volunteers

Join us for this year's Holiday Express as we transform Pullen Amusement Park into a Holiday Wonderland where participants can enjoy lights/displays, train rides, carousel rides, arts and crafts, and a visit with Santa. This event is presented by the Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources and the Crabtree Rotary Club.

Volunteers are needed December 3-6 and 10-13 from 3pm-9pm each night. For this special event, individuals will assist with running holiday themed activity and craft stations or dressing up as a Holiday Express mascot. (Individuals interested in being a mascot should be energetic, outgoing, and enjoy interacting with kids and families). Event will take place Rain/Snow or Shine!

All volunteers must attend the MANDATORY orientation on Monday, November 30 from 6:30-8pm at Pullen Community Center.

To volunteer, you must be at least 15 years old and register online. Volunteer Registration will close on Sunday, November 22 and is on a first come, first serve basis.

Invasive Species Program

The Raleigh Parks System consists of over 10,000 acres of parkland. Through the use of staff and volunteers, our department strives to maintain our parks and greenways for all to use and enjoy. A major area of concern that is threatening the Raleigh Parks System is invasive plant species. These exotic plants threaten the natural ecosystem, limit visibility, and affect safety in all our parks and greenways.

In September, the Invasive Species Program was created to assist with the management of invasive species within our system. The program will serve as an a resource to manage infestations, prevent introductions and provide educational opportunities to all citizens. Interested individuals and groups can volunteer to assist with managing the invasive species in our parks. Volunteer opportunities include: manual removal of invasive species at designated parks and mapping plant species.

For more information on invasive species and volunteering, contact our Invasive Program Coordinator, Leigh Bragassa

November V.I.Ps

October was a month full of exciting volunteer projects. Our Volunteers in Parks (VIPs) assisted with planting Fall annuals, removing invasives, mulching, planting bulbs, cleaning up our greenways, parks, and streams, and planting trees. We also had several volunteers assist with Fall Carnivals and Halloween events at our community centers. Altogether, our department had 577 individuals volunteer 1,580 hours of their time to our city parks, special events, and programs. A big thanks to each of you for your volunteer service to the Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department!

Adopt-A-Playground

The Adopt-A-Playground program allows citizen volunteers and groups to help keep our playgrounds safe and clean. Volunteer responsibilities include: visually inspecting and wiping down equipment, picking up litter, and raking sand/woodchips. Volunteers are asked to complete an Adopt-A-Playground agreement and participate in volunteer activities once a month for a year.

Adopt-A-Park

The Adopt-A-Park Program is always looking for new volunteers and groups to enhance city parks.

The citizen volunteer or group agrees to maintain the designated park or open space quarterly for at least one year. The volunteer or group of volunteers is asked to sign an Adopt-A-Park agreement. This agreement is renewed on a yearly basis.

To join the Adopt-A-Park program, contact Ashley Deans or Cindy Trumbower.

 Volunteer Testimonials

"Thank you for the opportunity to work with you on cleaning up Chavis Park. And thank you for allowing us to ride on the carousel!  It was a fitting end to our day!"

"Thank you for letting us volunteer with the City of Raleigh Parks! The volunteers relayed how much everyone enjoyed the opportunity, and we appreciate you sharing the photos, they are great. We look forward to partnering with you in the future."

"The folks from City of Raleigh were so easy to work with. Gave us instructions instead of orders. Even when we needed more chips in an area, they always asked instead of getting upset that we had missed a spot."

"The best part of my volunteer experience was talking with other volunteers. It was also a plus finding a plant that was new to me."

"We want to hear from you! Let us know how we can improve your volunteer experience by completing our short Volunteer Survey.
