Volunteers Have Great Turnout at First Annual It's My Park and Trail Day

Peggy griffin

On April 18, our department held it's first annual It's My Park and Trail Day. During this City-wide clean up effort, 173 volunteers gave 417.5 hours of their time to help beautify our parks and greenway trails. These outstanding volunteers included school organizations, service clubs, Adopt-A-Park and Adopt-A-Trail groups, Girl Scout and Boy Scout Troops, and individual neighbors. Altogether we were able to collect hundreds of bags of litter at approximately 15 parks and 20 miles of greenway trails in just one day! Thanks for your commitment to keeping our Raleigh Parks System clean.

Fred Fletcher Outstanding Volunteers

The 20th Annual Fred Fletcher Outstanding Volunteer Awards Ceremony was held this month to recognize some of our department's outstanding volunteers. These 14 individuals and groups have donated thousands of hours of their time over the past few decades to assist with athletic leagues, park maintenance and restoration, and recreational programming. On behalf of the Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department, we would like to congratulate each of you on this prestigious honor and thank you for your volunteer service.

Raleigh Convention Center Gets Revamped Thanks to LexisNexis

convention center planting

Volunteers from LexisNexis took an entire day to contribute their talents and resources to creating a new and improved landscape at the Raleigh Convention Center. The group was able to plant hundreds of annuals and perennials to create a unique centerpiece in downtown Raleigh.  For this project, 9 volunteers gave a total of 50 hours to beautify this high profile area. Our department  would like to say a big thank to this corporate group for their outstanding volunteer service.

Welcome Our New Volunteers

We would like to recognize a few individuals and groups that have recently joined our Adopt-A-Park and Adopt-A-Trail programs. For these opportunities, volunteers agree to maintain their adopted site for one year. Each quarter they participate in park maintenance projects and greenway cleanups to help beautify our Raleigh Parks System and Capital Area Greenway System. We look forward to seeing the impact each of these volunteers have on their adopted site.

May V.I.Ps

April showers have brought an abundance of May flowers to our Raleigh Parks. This month our Volunteers in Parks (VIPs) stayed busy with several park beautification projects that included mulching, planting flower beds and vegetable gardens, removing invasives, and adding surfacing to playgrounds. We also had several volunteers assist with the Wake County Senior Games and Special Olympics Spring Games. During the month of April, the department had approximately 690 individuals volunteer 1,831 hours of their time to our city parks, special events, and programs. A big thanks to each of you for contributing your time, talents, and resources to the Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department!
