Did you know? Pollinators are a vital component of our ecosystem, and an essential link to the world's food supply. That's one of the many reasons why it's so important to learn about them and protect them, and that's why Parks & Gardens is participating in the Parks for Pollinators BioBlitz this September.
What is a BioBlitz? The Parks for Pollinators BioBlitz is an event where community members work with parks staff to create a snapshot of the variety of wildlife found in local parks. The information gathered during the month will help us understand how we can better protect pollinators in our community.
Participants may join our team on the iNaturalist app and upload photos taken on their own throughout the month, and/or you can attend one of our organized BioBlitz events for an introduction to iNaturalist and to spend some time taking photos in the following parks:
Sunday, September 11: 1:30-3:30pm Cape Fear Museum Park
Sunday, September 25: 9am-12pm Smith Creek Park

Move Forward Go Further
A quarter-cent public transportation sales tax will be on the November 2022 ballot for New Hanover County citizens to vote on. The purpose of the tax is to provide a dedicated source of revenue to expand and enhance our community's networks for bicycling, walking, and public transportation, including:
- Bike and pedestrian multi-use paths and
sidewalks
- Crosswalks and safety improvements for
intersections
- Wave Transit innovations and increased
efficiencies
- Funding toward the Rail Realignment
Project
The sales tax would bring in approximately $14 million a year through goods purchased. It would equate to approximately 25 cents per every $100 spent, and the tax would not apply to items like groceries, fuel, and prescriptions.
