May is Older Americans Month

Every May, the Administration for Community Living leads the national celebration of Older Americans Month!  This year's focus is on aging in place - how older adults can plan to stay in their homes and live independently in their communities for as long as possible.  The 2022 theme, Age My Way, is an opportunity for all of us to explore the many ways older adults can remain in and be involved with their communities.  Learn more about Older Americans Month and aging in place at acl.gov.

Parks & Gardens is excited to partner with the New Hanover County Senior Resource Center to provide opportunities for older adults in our community to stay active and healthy!  Check out these upcoming programs for ages 55+ coming up in May:

Senior Tennis Social

Join us for a fun-filled tennis event at Echo Farms Park on May 4th from 10am-2pm! Seniors 55+ with all levels of tennis experience welcome! To register, please call 910-798-7730.

 

pickleball

Beginner Pickleball Clinic for Seniors

Learn the basics of the game of pickleball or brush up on your skills in this beginner 4-week session for ages 55+! This clinic will take place at Northern Regional Park on Wednesdays at 9:30am May 11 - June 1. Registration is required at 910-798-6450.  If you have your own equipment, please bring it to each session, otherwise equipment can be provided for you.

Summer Lifeguards Needed - $15/hour

Parks & Gardens is looking for lifeguards to work the summer at Echo Farms Park!  Pay is $15/hour.  We will train and certify qualified candidates.  Learn more and apply today at Parks.NHCgov.com/JoinOurTeam.

*Applicants must be at least 16 years old and pass a pre-test to participate in the lifeguard training, which includes a 300-yard swim, 2-minute tread and deep water dive to retrieve a 10-pound brick.

Naturalist Walk at Smith Creek Park Preserve

Join our environmental educators from 9:30-11am on May 7 for a walk around the nature trail at Smith Creak Park Preserve and learn all about the flora and fauna that live there.  Program is free and pre-registration is required at Parks.NHCgov.com.
