Birding
Did you know that North Carolina is home to over 440 bird species? According to ebird.org, over 350 bird species have been spotted right here in New Hanover County. Parks & Gardens has two "great birding sites" listed on the NC Birding Trail: Airlie Gardens and Smith Creek Park. If you're interested in trying out birding, February is a great time to start! Airlie Gardens is participating in the 2022 Great Backyard Bird Count by holding two educational workshops:
Friday, February 18: 8-9:30am (for ages 12+) Learn how to use the Merlin ID app to identify birds and how to use and record information in the eBird app.
Saturday, February 19: 9-10:30am (for all ages) Learn how to use binoculars and identify common bird species.
Both programs include a bird hike around the gardens. Cost for each day is $9/Adult (13+), $3/Child (4-12), $5/NHC Resident & Military and free for Airlie Members. Pre-registration is required for all participants at AirlieGardens.org.
