Happy New Year!

2020 looked a lot different from years past, but we made it through!  One thing we learned for sure was how essential local parks and open spaces are to the community, especially during a health crisis.  The staff of New Hanover County Parks & Gardens worked hard all year to keep your county parks open, clean and safe for all to enjoy.  We are proud to serve the public every day by providing a place to have fun, improve physical and mental health, provide stress relief, increase socialization, promote environmental stewardship and build community through facilities and activities that are open to all people.

Here is a look back on some of the highlights from the past year:

  • 166 new trees were planted in our county parks and other New Hanover County properties.
  • Echo Farms Park celebrated the completion of park renovations including a brand new tennis and pool clubhouse in October.
  • Airlie Gardens completed the final phase of an innovative stormwater project to enhance the garden’s ability to handle stormwater and maintain historic and environmental qualities.
  • Design of the 42.5-acre "Battle Park" was completed in November.
  • Airlie Gardens hosted is eighth annual art exhibit SQUIRRELS!

Visit Parks.NHCgov.com to learn about these projects and MORE!  We hope you and your family have a safe and happy new year and look forward to a great 2021!

New Tennis Programs at Echo Farms Park

Are you looking to get active and meet new people in the new year?  Then come to Echo Farms Park!  We have new weekly clinics and special programs for all skill levels beginning January 25 including:

  • Heart Pumping Tennis group fitness class- combines cardio with tennis drills to get your heart rate up and burn some calories.
  • Stroke of the Day clinics- one just for the ladies, and one for the men- that will help participants brush up on their tennis strokes and learn new skills.
  • We're partnering with GWTA to bring you Try Tennis- a six-week program specifically for beginners to learn the basics of tennis. Two opportunities:  Mondays 6-7pm or Thursdays 10:30-11:30am.

Visit Parks.NHCgov.com/EchoFarms to learn about these programs and MORE!

Help Us Name the Park

Parks & Gardens recently completed the design process for a new park in southern New Hanover County. The park's working name "Battle Park" was based on its location in proximity to the Battle Park neighborhood, but now it's time to give the park an official new name and we need your help.  Click here to learn more about the new park and submit your suggestion for the new name.

Save the Date - Tree Planting Volunteer Opportunity

Mark your calendars for Saturday, February 27 at 9am for a tree planting to be held on three of New Hanover County's FEMA properties.  The NC Urban Forest Council has graciously provided funds to plant a total of 48 trees between the three properties through their Legacy Tree Fund.  Click here for more information and to sign up to volunteer.

Don't miss out on your chance to own one of the sculptures from Airlie Gardens' art exhibit SQUIRRELS!  The sculptures are currently up for auction online until 10pm on January 15.  Learn more and bid on your favorite squirrel today at www.32auctions.com/squirrels.
