Happy New Year! 2018 was full of exciting upgrades and new amenities for some of your favorite county parks! Here is a recap of some of the year's highlights:

Pages Creek Park Preserve opened with a one-mile nature trail, environmental education, kayak launch & storage
- New playgrounds were added to Ogden, Snows Cut, River Road & Kings Grant Parks
- New online shelter reservations site launched, making our reservations process faster & easier

Airlie Gardens hosted its sixth annual art exhibit- Gnome Invasion
- New 1.3-mile Middle Sound Greenway Trail opened for pedestrians & bicycles
- Veterans Park tennis courts were resurfaced
- Tennis courts at Northern Regional Park were converted to six new pickleball courts
- Baseball infields at Ogden Park were renovated
- Gold Star Families Memorial Monument, honoring fallen soldiers and their families, was added to Hugh MacRae Park
- Kings Grant Park was renovated with a new playground, basketball court & recreational multi-purpose field (a new picnic shelter is currently under construction)
- New Hanover County purchased the land for Echo Farms Park, and the existing five clay tennis courts opened in September

NHC 4-H YOUth Science Day "Rockets to the Rescue"
On Saturday, January 19th from 10am-1pm, the NHC 4-H Teen Leaders Club is hosting its first NHC 4-H YOUth Science Day for ages 9-18 (4th grade & up). This free event combines two key 4-H issue areas - science and food security - and incorporates aerospace engineering concepts to help youth design a rocket out of everyday materials. TreeFest- Jan 18 & 19
Increase tree canopy and biodiversity in your yard by visiting TreeFest, inside Independence Mall in the JC Penney court. Choose any combination of trees or native grasses from the list, many of which are native to the area. The event will run 10am-5pm, or until trees run out. Limit of 5 trees per household. Plants are free with a suggested donation of $3. TreeFest is funded by the donations received during the event. For more information contact (910) 798-7130.
