2018

2017 was another busy year for New Hanover County Parks & Gardens!  Our staff worked hard to upgrade some of your favorite parks amenities and add some new ones.  Here is a recap of some of the year's highlights:

  • Ogden Skatepark opened in February
  • Hugh MacRae Park Splashpad opened in April
  • New full-size basketball court at Ogden Park
  • LED lighting upgrade & resurfacing of Ogden Park tennis courts
  • The first Park Preserve opened at Smith Creek Park
  • Lights were added to the Hugh MacRae Park basketball court & Ogden dog park
  • Airlie Gardens restored its famous Bottle Chapel back to its original beauty
  • New playground at Northern Regional Park opened in November

We look forward to seeing what 2018 brings!

Trash Mob

Trash Mob is Expanding

Are you tired of looking at trash as you drive around the streets of New Hanover County?  So are we!  And now we're expanding!  In addition to our quarterly clean-ups on Harris Road, we now meet monthly at 10am on the third Wednesday of each month at rotating locations around New Hanover County to pick up litter and help keep our county beautiful. This month, the Trash Mob will clean up:

Sat, Jan 13th 9-11am:  Harris Road

Wed, Jan 17th 10-11am: N College Road at Kings Drive

All supplies will be provided (safety vests, gloves, bags & trash pickers). Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age and can volunteer as an individual or group.  Contact Jodi Rich by email or (910) 798-7629 for more information.

Get Moving with Parks

Does your New Year's Resolution involve better health?  Did you know that people who use parks and open spaces are 3 times more likely to achieve the recommended levels of physical activity than non-users?  And, spending time in nature decreases anxiety and lowers levels of depression and stress.  The best part is that use of your county parks is absolutely FREE!  Visit our website to learn about all the ways you can get more exercise while improving your mental health in a park near you.
