Parks & Gardens strives to maintain and operate parks and facilities that enrich the lives of the community and promote an overall healthier lifestyle.
A New Hanover County tradition since 2005, guests from around the world have visited Airlie Gardens from Thanksgiving to Christmas to take in the sparkling sights and festive sounds of the season. Guests will experience a 0.5m stroll through the Gardens, on a self-guided walking tour while feasting their eyes on a spectacular array of lights and holiday displays. Also in attendance, Santa Claus himself, and a few local food and beverage vendors with hot chocolate, popcorn, cookies, beer, wine and more! Tickets often sell out in advance so reserve yours early!
Times & Dates
-There are two run-times per evening: 5:00-7:00PM and 7:00-9:00PM
Join us for a volunteer work day at Veterans Park on Thursday, November 2nd from 8am-12pm. Volunteers will work alongside parks staff, mulching and making landscaping improvements. All tools will be provided- just bring your own gloves. Volunteers will meet at the Veterans Park flag pole at 7:45am. Email us for more information
Bird Bonanza at Airlie Gardens
Help us welcome our winter bird residents! Join Airlie Gardens, Wild Bird & Garden and other community organizations from 8-11:30am for a morning of birding fun! There will be fun, hands-on activities for kids and adults throughout the morning. This event is included in regular garden admission and FREE for Airlie members! More Information
Parks Updates
Middle Sound Loop Multi-Purpose Trail
Construction of the new multi-purpose trail on Middle Sound Loop Rd is set to begin November 1st. The project will consist of on-road bicycle lanes on Red Cedar Rd, an eight-foot wide off-road multi-use path from Red Cedar to Oyster Ln, on-road path along Oyster and Bright Leaf Rd and a pedestrian bridge connecting to Thais Trail. Also, a sidewalk will be installed at Ogden Elementary School to Kenmore Dr. The project will link with the existing bike lanes along Covil Farm Rd, connecting to the Cross City Trail on Military Cutoff Rd.
Northern Regional Park Playground Crews are making progress on the new playground at Northern Regional Park! We expect completion of the project by the end of November.
New Parks Bulletin Boards
We've added another way to keep you informed of what's happening in NHC Parks & Gardens. Bulletin boards have been installed at the playground and splashpad at Hugh MacRae Park, by the playground at Ogden Park, by the picnic shelter at Smith Creek Park and at the entrance to Veterans Park.
Splashpad at Hugh MacRae Park The splashpad is officially closed for the season. We hope you enjoyed splashing around this season and we look forward to re-opening in April 2018!

Parks & Gardens Office: Closed Nov 23 & 24th Airlie Gardens: Closed Nov 23rd
Airlie Gardens will re-open at 9am on Friday, November 24th. In order to prepare for Enchanted Airlie, the gardens will close at 4pm on scheduled dates.
