Parks & Gardens strives to maintain and operate parks and facilities that enrich the lives of the community and promote an overall healthier lifestyle.
Ever heard of a Flash Mob? Have you wanted to participate, but just can’t dance? You’re in luck… We are holding a Trash Mob on Saturday, April 22nd from 9-11am! We are currently seeking volunteers to help us pick up litter in various areas around the county. We will assign group locations and provide all the necessary supplies prior to the event. Trash Mob volunteers must be at least 16 years of age and can sign up as an individual or group. Email us to sign up. More Info
What's New in Parks & Gardens?
Parks & Gardens staff have been hard at work making upgrades to some of your favorite parks amenities!
Hugh MacRae Park
-The basketball court is getting new lights. Soon you'll be able to shoot hoops until 10pm each night.
Northern Regional Park
-The new disc golf holes have been completed and the course is fully functional.
Ogden Park
-We are adding lights to the dog park, so you and your furry friends will have more time to play.
-The tennis court lights are being converted to LEDs, making them more energy efficient and cost effective. Special thanks to our friends at the Greater Wilmington Tennis Association for helping share the cost of the new lights.
The Big Splash
It's the moment you've all been waiting for... the NEW splashpad at Hugh MacRae Park is opening on Sat, April 1st. Tasty Tee's food truck and Kona Ice will be there from 12-2pm with goodies for purchase as well as county representatives including Cape Fear Museum, Library, Elections, DSS, Safe Kids Cape Fear, Sheriff & Fire Departments. Plant an Azalea Week: April 2-8th
Plant an Azalea Week is a joint program of NHC Parks & Gardens, Cape Fear Garden Club and NHC Parks Conservancy. The week celebrates the importance of the azalea to our community and encourages residents to plant an azalea in their yard. Plant an Azalea cards are for sale in the Airlie Gardens gift shop and for every card sold, an azalea is planted in an NHC park. To date, more than 150 azaleas have been planted in our parks! A celebration ceremony will take place on Tues, Apr 4th at 10am at Hugh MacRae Park. More Info
Earth Day Festival: April 22nd, 12-6pm
Celebrate Earth Day at Hugh MacRae Park! This family friendly event will include live music, kids' zone, food and exhibitors with interesting information and products that relate to our planet. Earth Day was created in 1970 to promote environmental awareness and to encourage progressive action around the world and has since spread to 184 countries with participation from 100's of millions of people. Yoga in the Gardens
Join us on Earth Day for yoga on the Oak Lawn at Airlie Gardens on Sat, Apr 22nd, 8-9am.
The following week, a new 4-week spring yoga series begins. Classes are held in various areas around the gardens on Fridays 8-9am, Apr 28-May 19.
All yoga classes are lead by longwave yoga and cost just $16/class ($5 discount for Airlie Members). Drop-ins are welcome- just bring your own mat and/or towel. More Info
Food Truck Rodeo: April 23rd, 12-5pm
Join us Sun, Apr 23rd as the 7th Food Truck Rodeo rolls back to Ogden Park from 12-5pm. A record # of food trucks will serve everything from hot dogs to gourmet treats and Boba Funk will provide live music. At 2pm, we will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the new skatepark. Proceeds from this event will help add special touches to the skatepark, so bring your family, friends, chairs and blankets and enjoy supporting the skatepark! More info
