N.C. Forest Service personnel at Jordan Lake Educational State Forest in Chapel Hill are planning to conduct prescribed fire operations on a 74-acre tract, weather permitting, within the next several days. The burn is planned for an area encompassing the Demonstration Trail, which flanks a peninsula in the southern section of the educational state forest.
Visitors to Jordan Lake ESF and surrounding areas should expect the presence of smoke on days when prescribed fire is being implemented. Depending on burn location and wind direction, evidence of smoke may still be present a few days after the burn. In the interest of safety, all visitors should choose alternate trails if visiting the forest the day of the burn.
Prescribed fire is the carefully planned use of fire under strict, predetermined weather and fuel parameters to obtain specific management objectives. This critical tool remains one of the most efficient and cost-effective forest management practices, helping North Carolina forests remain healthy and thrive. Prescribed fire improves overall health of the forest and wildlife habitat while consuming vegetative fuels to reduce wildfire risk.
Jordan Lake Educational State Forest is located in Chapel Hill (Chatham Co.).
