District Sees Significant Growth, Proficiency Improvements
Cumberland County Schools recently celebrated a significant achievement: 17 schools were removed from the state's low-performing list, according to the 2023-2024 performance and growth data released by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI). This achievement highlights the district's commitment to academic excellence and student success.
The NCDPI accountability report provides data on student performance based on End-of-Grade (EOG) and End-of-Course (EOC) assessments in subjects like ELA/Reading, Mathematics and Science. Tammy Howard, NCDPI's Senior Director of Accountability and Testing, emphasized that student growth trends across North Carolina indicate positive progress.
CCS Superintendent Dr. Marvin Connelly, Jr., praised the district’s progress, noting significant gains in student proficiency and the successful removal of schools from the low-performing list. The district saw notable increases in proficiency scores across 55 schools, with gains recorded in 12 of the 19 tested subject areas. Despite a slight decline in 4th and 7th-grade reading, CCS remains focused on continuous improvement.
In terms of growth, 84.1% of CCS schools met or exceeded growth expectations, surpassing the statewide average of 72.5%. Jack Britt High School achieved a maximum growth score for the third consecutive year. Additionally, 50 schools improved their School Performance Grade, with 12 schools improving their School Performance Letter Grade.
The district’s graduation rate for 2023-2024 was 85.2%, slightly below the previous year but close to the state average. College readiness, as measured by ACT scores, showed areas for improvement, though several high schools reported significant gains.
Looking ahead, CCS continues to focus on its PASE framework (Performance, Accountability, Support and Empowerment) to provide targeted support to schools. Dr. Connelly emphasized the ongoing commitment to improving proficiency and growth across all student subgroups, acknowledging that while challenges remain, the district is encouraged by its progress.
