CCS' Indian Education recently invited Spectrum News 1 Meteorologist Vernon Turner to speak to the fifth graders at Ed V. Baldwin Elementary School. The 2008 Jack Britt High School Graduate demonstrated to the students how to create a cloud in a bottle using a bicycle pump and created a mini tornado by warming water and adding air and dry ice. The students also had fun answering Turner's meteorology quiz questions during his visit. Indian Education students thanked Turner by presenting him with a rainstick and an Apache blessing. Turner filmed the fifth-grade classes and promised to air the footage during the March 30 Spectrum News' Weather on the 1's forecast.
Congratulations to John Griffin Middle School, who recently won first-place honors in the Region IV Middle School Battle of the Books competition! They will go on to represent Cumberland County Schools and Region IV at the state-level competition in May.
Cumberland Academy 6-12 senior Nikiyah Calloway recently received some fantastic and unusual feedback on her artwork at the Juried Art Show by the Arts Council of Fayetteville & Cumberland County. Not only was Nikiyah's art sold at the Juried Art Show, but a couple who attended the show later also wanted to buy it. The patron sent emails to the Arts Council asking for Nikiyah to paint a similar artwork for her as a gift to her husband. The Arts Council said that this has never happened before but, from it, Nikiyah is set to paint her first commissioned artwork!
