March 12 Board of Education Meeting
The Cumberland County Board of Education will hold its monthly meeting at 6 p.m.
on Tuesday, March 12. The meeting will be open to the public via live-streaming available at https://www.youtube.com/@CumberlandCoSch/streams, and there will also be capacity-limited seating available to members of the public. During the meeting, citizens may share their public comments in person only. As always, each comment is limited to three minutes with a total of 30 minutes set aside for public comments. Individuals requesting to share public comments during the public comment period may sign up using the following link: https://goo.gl/forms/ZGa8Q33DJMo3D9tH3, which will be accessible starting at noon on Tuesday, March 12, and remain open until 5:30 p.m. No walk-up sign-ups will be allowed. Citizens must sign up electronically in advance of the meeting before the aforementioned deadline. Documents, attachments and presentations to be considered or received by the Board of Education will be available for review by the public at the BoardDocs site, which may be accessed through a link appearing on the Cumberland County Schools homepage under BOARD OF EDUCATION (BOE), at www.ccs.k12.nc.us. This meeting will be held in the Central Services Boardroom, located at 2465 Gillespie Street Fayetteville, NC 28306.
School Social Workers' Hard Work & Dedication to be Recognized
In observance of School Social Work Week (March 3 - 9), CCS' Social Work Office will be recognizing the hard work and dedication of the district's 99 School Social Workers. This special event takes place on Thursday, March 14 from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. at the Cliffdale Recreation Center. During this time, the 2024 School Social Worker of the Year will also be announced.
College Planning 101: Cash for College, Financial Aid & Scholarships
This virtual Cumberland Family Academy (CFA) session will feature Mychal Wynn, a nationally recognized college planning expert. Learn how to navigate the financial aspects of college, including finding scholarships and accessing financial aid. Wynn will provide valuable insights on crafting a successful high school resume, understanding financial aid basics, estimating college costs, exploring scholarship opportunities, determining eligibility, and accessing specific programs for North Carolina families. The session will be streamed on Cumberland County Schools' Facebook page at 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 14. On February 26, district leaders alongside members of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., gathered at C. Wayne Collier Elementary School to participate in an African American Read-In. During the event, volunteer readers shared stories written by African-American authors with the thought of celebrating Black History Month as well as furthering the school's strategic objective of boosting literacy among its students.
CCS' World Languages Program recently hosted its annual Chinese New Year Celebration at Seventy-First High School, marking the 11th year since its inaugural event. This year's celebration, which highlighted the theme "One World, One Family,” offered incredible experiences that included interactive games, arts and crafts, traditional dancing and authentic cooking. Those who attended were able to get a glimpse of numerous traditions around the globe.
Walker-Spivey Elementary School’s Step Team recently hosted The Celebration of The Culture event which included performing for members of the nearby Spivey Community. The performance helped 'round out' the school's numerous Black History Month (February 1 - 29) activities!
