African American Read-In
In observance of Black History Month, C. Wayne Collier Elementary School is sponsoring an African-American Read-In on Monday, February 26 from 9:00 - 9:45 a.m. Members of the Beta Chi Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc,. along with district administrators are planning to read to kindergarten through second graders. They will be sharing books written by African-American authors like Meena Harris, the niece of U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris, NBA Player LeBron James and many more.

The ICON (Innovative Career Opportunities Now) Summer Internship Program allows Cumberland County high school students who are at least 15 years old to apply for and interview to work in paid positions for six weeks this summer. This work-based learning program shares an educational approach utilizing the workplace to provide students with the competencies and skills that allow them to connect school experiences to real-life work activities through career exploration, exposure to the real workplace, and achievement of work readiness skills. All BOE Committees to Meet
All Cumberland County Board of Education Committees will hold meetings beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, February 29, 2024. The meetings will be open to the public via live-streaming available at https://www.youtube.com/user/CumberlandCoSch, and there will also be capacity-limited seating available to members of the public. Documents, attachments, and presentations to be considered or received by the Board of Education will be available for review by the public at the BoardDocs site, which may be accessed through a link that appears on the Cumberland County Schools homepage under BOARD OF EDUCATION (BOE), at www.ccs.k12.nc.us. As these are committee meetings of the Board, there will be no public comment period, but public comments will again be shared at the Board's next regular meeting on Tuesday, March 12, 2024. Recently, Governor Roy Cooper and the North Carolina African American Heritage Commission honored CCS Superintendent Dr. Marvin Connelly, Jr., for his outstanding contributions to the field of education. This proud moment was celebrated at the Governor's Mansion in Raleigh.
Each year, New Century International Elementary School celebrates Chinese New Year with a performance by the school's Immersion classes. The above photo was taken during the school's February 7 performance when the students shared Chinese culture through songs and written pieces that helped bring Chinese heritage to life.
The Fayetteville-Cumberland Human Relations (FCHR) Commission recently honored Retired Sergeant Major (SGM) Ruby Murray, a JROTC Instructor at South View High School, with the 2024 Community Lifetime Achievement Award during a special luncheon at the Cape Fear Botanical Gardens in Fayetteville. During the annual event, community awards are given to recognize local residents for their active engagement locally in promoting positive human relations.
