Recognizing the Dedication of School Counselors
To celebrate National School Counseling Week and recognize the dedication and hard work of our local School Counselors, CCS' School Counseling Department will announce the 2024 School Counselor of the Year and host a national speaker on Tuesday, February 6 from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. Approximately 285 school counselors, principals and school administrators will be attending the event which will take place in the Tony Rand Center's multi-purpose room on the campus of Fayetteville Technical Community College. After the long-awaited announcement of the district's School Counselor of the Year, scheduled at 1:15 p.m., Master teacher and Transformational school leader Principal Baruti Kafele from New Jersey will talk with the educators about how vital a school counselor is to the fabric of the school community.
CCS' Middle School Arts Education Program Info Meetings
CCS' Arts Education Program is asking students and their parents if they want to learn more about middle school band, chorus or orchestra! If so, middle schools throughout the district are hosting informational meetings from Tuesday, February 6 - Thursday, February 8 from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. with hopes of enrolling new students for the 2024-2025 school year. General information along with details about how to make arrangements for instruments will be shared. Showing of "The Crux: Educating Kids About Gun Violence 2" Today's youth face serious choices and have real-world concerns. Join the Fayetteville Police Department and CCS' Student Services as they explore these choices and the consequences that follow during the showing of the film "The Crux: Educating Kids About Gun Violence 2." Audience discussion will follow. The film shows this week from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 8 at Pine Forest High School. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. This event is intended for students in the 6th-12th grades and their parents. For more information, visit the CCS Website.
Thousands of Students Expected to 'Check Out' CCS Career Fair
Cumberland County Schools Career and Technical Education department is expecting approximately 2,000 students to attend the CCS 2023-2024 Career Fair Pathway to Success on Friday, February 9 in the Crown Expo Center from 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Middle and high school students will get the opportunity to talk with over 100 business professionals about their career field and what they do each day.

In recognition of Seventy-First High School's Varsity Football Team's commendable performance in the 3A State Championship Game, North Carolina Senator Val Applewhite visited the campus on February 2 to congratulate the Mighty Falcons and their coaches on their outstanding performance and season. School Board members and CCS Administrators were on hand to extend their congratulations as well.

Howard Hall Elementary School Principal Erica Fenner-McAdoo, who was recently announced as the Sandhills Regional Principal of the Year, is featured on the N.C. Department of Public Instruction's website in a release titled "Nine Named Regional Principals of the Year." In the piece, Fenner-McAdoo comments on the importance of professional development for the staff she leads. “Professional growth is what teachers need to remain refreshed and stay in the profession. In a prestigious recognition of educational excellence, Dr. Marvin Connelly Jr., superintendent of Cumberland County Schools (CCS), was honored as the "Outstanding Educator of the Year" at the Greater Fayetteville Chamber Annual Awards held January 30. This esteemed award highlights his unwavering commitment, innovation and passion in the field of education. The award was created to honor those working in K-12 public or private schools, or higher education institutions within Cumberland County, who have notably contributed to the school community, fostered a love for learning and inspired students of diverse backgrounds and abilities. In addition to Dr. Connelly's recognition, the Chamber celebrated the achievements of two other notable CCS educators who were nominated for this award. Sheena Patterson, the school social worker at Ferguson-Easley Elementary School, and Elizabeth “Lizzie” Shepherd, a teacher at Vanstory Hills Elementary School, were both acknowledged for their exceptional contributions to education and their ability to inspire and motivate students.
