Cumberland County Schools Hosts 'Surprise' Indoor Parade to Celebrate Dr. Marvin Connelly, Jr. as 2024 North Carolina Superintendent of the Year
Fayetteville, N.C. -- On Wednesday afternoon, Cumberland County Schools (CCS) held an indoor parade and celebration in honor of Dr. Marvin Connelly, Jr.'s recognition as the 2024 A. Craig Phillips North Carolina Superintendent of the Year. District and school administrators, along with Central Services personnel, lined the halls of the William 'Bill' Harrison Educational Resource Center.
The celebration began with an energetic performance by the E.E. Smith High School drumline, directed by Roosevelt Pratt, Jr. Their drumbeats led Dr. Connelly through an indoor parade route, greeted by enthusiastic cheers from CCS staff waving congratulatory signs and throwing confetti. Cooper, the district's mascot, joined in escorting Dr. Connelly down the hall, adding to the festive atmosphere.
Jennifer Lloyd, the Director of Professional Development for CCS and the event's emcee, officially introduced Dr. Connelly to the crowd as the recently announced North Carolina Superintendent of the Year, followed by thunderous applause. The program featured moving speeches from district leaders, including Board of Education Chairwoman Deanna Jones, Associate Superintendent of Human Resources Ruben Reyes, 2024 Principal of the Year Erica Fenner-McAdoo and 2024 Assistant Principal of the Year Kristle Rouse. Each speaker lauded Dr. Connelly for his visionary leadership and significant contributions to the district's growth and success.
Surprised by the unexpected fanfare, Dr. Connelly was visibly moved and momentarily at a loss for words, reflecting his deep appreciation to CCS staff.
This indoor parade was not just a celebration of Dr. Connelly's recent accolade, but it was also a testament to the unity and commitment to excellence within the Cumberland County Schools family.
