39th Annual Festival "Went to Bat for the Arts"
Hundreds of Exceptional Children gathered for a day packed with fun and the Arts
Fayetteville, NC -- About 500 students in Cumberland County Schools' (CCS) Exceptional Children's department filled the Crown Agri-Expo Center on Thursday for the opportunity to celebrate the arts.
The district hosted its 39th Annual Very Special Arts (VSA) Celebration to applaud the creativity of its students. This year's theme, "Going to Bat for the Arts," coincided with Opening Day for Major League Baseball and 'gave a nod' to the time-honored sport.
"It is important for students to spend time with their parents, teachers and peers in a non-academic setting," said Dr. Pamela Adams-Watkins, the executive director of Exceptional Children's Services. "The support and dedication of the staff members bring it all together and students know they are cared for."
Students could be seen throughout the Agri-Expo Center at different stations working with their teachers to paint, perform and even 'play baseball.'
"It was truly wonderful," said Adapted Physical Education Teacher Ryan Covert. "This is the first festival we've had since COVID, and to have a baseball-related theme was awesome. We could tell that the kids had a blast!"
