Exceptional Children's PAC Meeting - CHILD FIND
Join the Exceptional Children's Parent Advisory Council for a virtual meeting on Monday, March 20 at 5 p.m. to learn about the Child Find procedure in place to locate all children with disabilities residing in the county. This includes children with disabilities attending private schools or home schools, regardless of the severity of their disability, and those who are in need of special education and related services. See Something, Say Something: School Safety in CCS
This month, Cumberland Family Academy (CFA) continues its Masterclasses for Today’s Families series with a special virtual presentation from George Hall, the school system’s director of Safety and Security. Mr. Hall’s session, “See Something, Say Something: School Safety in CCS,” will provide viewers with information about safety and security protocols in the district and convey how everyone can do their part to help keep schools safe. The session will be streamed on the district's Facebook page at 6 p.m. on Monday, March 20.
#TBT – “It's Never Too Early: Career Awareness 101 Planning & Applying for College”
Families are being encouraged to join CCS on Thursday, March 23 at 6 p.m. for Cumberland Family Academy’s Throwback Thursday session titled "It's Never Too Early: Career Awareness 101 Planning & Applying for College.” Watch this family engagement session in order to delve into MajorClarity, the district's career awareness platform. It will help students identify careers that align with their interests and learning styles. The session will air on the district’s Facebook page.
ICON Summer Internship Program
The ICON Summer Internship Program allows CCS high school students ages 16+ to apply and interview to work in paid positions! This work-based learning program is an educational approach using the workplace to provide students with the competencies and skills that allow them to connect school experiences to real-life work activities through career exploration, exposure to the real workplace and the achievement of work readiness skills. Cumberland County Schools Announces New District Administrators
CCS Military Family & Youth Liaison Zakira Rich and Spring Lake Middle School Social Worker Rodrick Hudson recently presented artwork to Sgt. Cosmas Eaglin, Sr. He is a 108-year-old Marine veteran living at the North Carolina State Veterans Home in Fayetteville. He was part of the Montford Point Marines - the group of the first Black troops to enlist in the Marine Corps. After reading about Eaglin, Tyrone Harris, the art teacher at Spring Lake Middle School, was inspired and created the drawing which depicts Eaglin in various stages of his military career.
CCS students, staff and Board of Education members attended this year's Education Day Game sponsored by the Fayetteville Marksmen! What an excellent experience for our young people!

Luther 'Nick' Jeralds Middle School’s Physical Education/Health instructor, Coach Elorine Hill, was recently inducted into the CIAA (Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association) Hall of Fame! Her CIAA journey began as a student-athlete at St. Augustine's College (now-University), where she was an outstanding track & field athlete. During her collegiate career, Hill was a three-time All-American, national champion in the shot put, District 26 champion, and a member of St. Augustine's track teams that won the CIAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships and the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships. Graduating in 1987, Hill was inducted into St. Augustine's Hall of Fame in 2007.
Hill coached volleyball, tennis, women's basketball, and men's & women's cross country at Fayetteville State University (FSU). She is credited with starting both the cross country program and women's tennis program at FSU.
Massey Hill Classical High School Wins BIG TWICE!
Massey Hill Classical High School (MHCHS) advanced to the State Finals of the State Quiz Bowl Tournament for the Sandhills region.
Congratulations to the Theatre department at MHCHS for their recognition in the 2023 NC International Thespian Society (ITS) State Festival, which occurred March 10-12. Led by Molly Malone, seven students performed in five categories at the festival and brought home the following awards:
- Excellence in Duo Musical
- Excellence in Group Musical
- Excellence in Solo Musical
- Superior in Solo Musical
- Superior in Solo Acting
- Lersie Bermudez and Isabel Gare received Superior scores and are eligible to perform in June at the International Thespian Thespian Festival at Indiana University Bloomington
Lersie Bermudez, Serenity Briles, Isabel Gare, Dan Haggerty, Laura Jones, Jackson Miller, and Cameron Williams represented ITS troupe #6519 and Cumberland County Schools at the state festival which hosted over 700 students and 45 schools from across North Carolina on East Carolina University’s campus.

Eight fourth- and fifth-grade students were inducted into the Mary McArthur Elementary School Jr. National Beta Club on March 10. During the induction ceremony, students pledged to be honest and truthful; to maintain a credible scholastic record; to be of service to their teachers and peers; and to conduct themselves in an ethical and moral manner.
