About 250 third, fourth and fifth graders at Loyd E. Auman Elementary School recently got the opportunity of a lifetime.
On March 2, National Read Across America Day, Super Bowl Champ and Fayetteville native Joshua Williams paid a visit to their school as a special favor to his second-grade teacher and the school's principal, Tara Bratcher.
The Kansas City Chiefs cornerback read Dr. Seuss' classic book Oh, the Places You'll Go to the students at an assembly in the school's cafeteria. The effort, which was established by the National Education Association (NEA) in 1998, is geared toward getting kids excited about reading.
The Fayetteville State University graduate ended the story with some Q & A from the students and helpful tips that stressed the importance of getting a good education, making good decisions, choosing friends wisely and setting goals beyond high school.
"Winning the Super Bowl is the greatest accomplishment I have ever achieved," said Williams. "I want them [the students] to know that they can be anything they want to become. I hope they take some kind of principle out of my success and add it to theirs and become a better person than me."
