School District To Honor Six Individuals Who Embrace Serving Others
School Board to recognize those who realize that care and compassion saves lives and communities
Fayetteville, N.C. – Cumberland County Schools (CCS) recently acknowledged six more individuals for their consistent demonstration and commitment to CCS’ students, schools and core values — excellence, innovation, collaboration, equity, integrity and compassion.
During surprise school visits, Reid Ross Classical School (RRCS) Principal Tyson Johnson and Teacher Andrea Burns along with Anne Chesnutt Middle School (ACMS) Principal David Greene, Assistant Principal Whitney Iglesias and Teacher Gaundi Allen received the January 2023 Extra Mile Award and District 7 Elementary School PTA President Stephanie Boyea was surprised with the January 2023 Committed Community Support Award.
The award recipients will be formally recognized by members of the Cumberland County Board of Education during their monthly meeting on Tuesday, February 14 at 6 p.m. in the auditorium at the Educational Resource Center (ERC), located at 396 Elementary Drive/Fayetteville, NC 28301.
Extra Mile Award Recipient
The Extra Mile Award is designed to acknowledge employees who demonstrate a sustained high level of performance and inspire others to do their best.
Johnson, Burns, Greene, Iglesias and Allen are being called compassionate and caring because the educators, who are from two different middle schools, united in order to help rescue another CCS employee.
A teacher from ACMS became ill in her home and texted Burns, who is her former co-worker at RRCS, for help. With the permission of Principals Johnson and Greene, two of the teacher's current co-workers at ACMS, Iglesias and Allen, 'teamed up' with Burns to help save her life. They met at and gained entry to her home, called 9-1-1, gathered her medications and prepared her for the EMS' arrival. The teacher was hospitalized for several weeks but has since been discharged.
The group of educators are not only being considered compassionate and caring for 'jumping into action,' but they are being hailed as lifesaving heroes.

Committed Community Support Award Recipient
Stephanie Boyea, the PTA President at District 7 Elementary School, recently received the Committed Community Support Award, which is presented monthly to an individual or group for selflessly supporting the school system and helping students succeed. She will be formally recognized at a School Board meeting later this year.
Boyea was recognized because of her selfless service to District 7 Elementary and the community. Through the years, she has planned and coordinated many activities for the students of three surrounding communities (Godwin, Falcon and Wade). Boyea supports parents of non-English speaking students, coordinates activities for school projects, e.g., the book fairs, school dances, fundraisers for student programs, etc., and encourages others to volunteer their time and service to the district as well. Many agree that Boyea's attention to detail supports their community within Cumberland County Schools and contributes immensely to the school's learning environment.
