Local School Superintendent Selected to Receive Leadership Award
North Carolina Council for Exceptional Children announces Dr. Connelly as an award recipient
Fayetteville, N.C. -- Cumberland County Schools (CCS) is proud to announce that the North Carolina Council for Exceptional Children (NC CEC) recently selected Superintendent Dr. Marvin Connelly, Jr., as the 2023-2024 Felix Barker Leadership Award recipient.
"I am truly honored to have been selected to receive such a prestigious award," said Dr. Connelly. "This especially warms my heart because I started my career in public education as a teacher assistant and teacher of exceptional children after serving in the military. And, since then, I have been a staunch supporter and advocate of programs and services that make a difference in the lives of students who have special needs."
The award is given to a person in North Carolina who has displayed great leadership in the field of exceptional children and worked tirelessly to develop and sustain programs that enhance and support students with special needs.
The leadership award will be presented to Dr. Connelly during the NC CEC's Annual Conference Virtual Award Ceremony on Friday, February 17, 2023. He is the ninth recipient of the Felix Barker Leadership Award and this is the second time an administrator in CCS has received the award. Ruben Reyes, the associate superintendent of CCS' Human Resources, was the recipient in 2011.
The Council for Exceptional Children is a professional association of educators dedicated to advancing the success of children with exceptionalities through advocacy, standards, and professional development.
