CCS Observes MLK Day In observance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the district will be closed Monday, January 16 for students and staff.
Children's Author to Lead "Family Reading Fun" Night Cumberland Family Academy (CFA), the district’s family engagement outreach arm, is kicking off the new year with a family fun night. Cumberland County Schools' elementary school students, along with their families, are being invited to attend “Family Reading Fun” with Nationally Renowned Children’s Author Dr. Kimberly Johnson on Thursday, January 19 at William H. Owen Elementary School, located at 4533 Raeford Road, Fayetteville, NC 28304. Families can arrive at 5 p.m. for a pizza party and the opportunity to mingle and take photos with local school mascots. The session begins at 6 p.m.
2023-2024 Pre-K Registration Pre-K Registration for the 2023-2024 school year will begin on January 17, 2023, through the Universal Application Portal at letsgetenrolled.com. Families of children who will be 4 years old on or before August 31, 2023, and who live in Cumberland County are encouraged to register online. Priority will be given to families who complete the registration process by March 31, 2023. If families need further assistance, they are welcome to contact the Pre-K office at 910-483-7370, visit the Pre-K website at prek.ccs.k12.nc.us, or email CCS' Pre-K Coordinator Sean Brost at seanbrost@ccs.k12.nc.us.
Jan. 23 CCS Parent Advisory Council Meeting The families of EC students are encouraged to attend the Exceptional Children's Parent Advisory Council Meeting on Monday, January 23 from 5-6 p.m. at the Educational Resource Center (ERC) in Room 3. This month's in-person meeting will feature Cumberland County Schools Lead Occupational Therapist, Physical Therapist, and Speech Language Pathologist who will be discussing the differences between school-based therapy and private therapy. Families are encouraged to click here to share any EC-related concerns they may have before the meeting.
Tonya McGill Named NCCAT 2023 Empower Beginning Teacher of the Year Finalist Another one of Cumberland County Schools’ premier professionals is being recognized for making a difference in the lives of children. Tonya McGill, the district’s 2023 Beginning Teacher of the Year, has been selected as a finalist for the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching’s (NCCAT) 2023 Empower NC Beginning Teacher of the Year Award.
McGill, a fourth-grade teacher at Morganton Road Elementary School, is one of 27 finalists from across the state vying for the top honor. The award will be presented on March 9 on Western Carolina University’s campus.
The NCCAT Beginning Teacher of the Year will receive:
- $5,000 cash prize
- Participation in a GoGlobal NC trip in 2024
- Instructional supply funds for his/her school

- Travel expenses and substitute costs to participate in NCCAT professional development week March 6-10, 2023.
