Avon & Buxton Beach Nourishment Update |
|
Avon Beach Nourishment
On the afternoon of Thursday, May 28, 2026, Dare County’s contractor, Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company, began pumping sand in the middle of the Avon project area, near Yucca Street (just north from Food Lion), and is working north toward the Avon Fishing Pier. Once pumping within the northern portion of the Avon project area is complete, the contractor will begin working south from Yucca Street until they finish with the southern taper.
Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company estimates that it will take approximately 2 weeks (14 days) to place approximately 375,000 cubic yards of material on the beach in Avon (weather dependent).*

Buxton Beach Nourishment
A beach nourishment project for the unincorporated village of Buxton on Hatteras Island is expected to begin in mid-June 2026, placing 2 million cubic yards of sand onto the beach over a period of approximately 95 days (weather dependent).*

Know Your Evacuation Zone
When an evacuation order is issued, Dare County utilizes two geographical evacuation zones, as follows.
Zone A: Zone A comprises areas south of Oregon Inlet. This includes all seven villages on Hatteras Island (Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras).
Zone B: Zone B comprises areas north of Oregon Inlet. This includes the Dare County mainland, Roanoke Island, Martin’s Point and Colington, as well as the towns of Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head and Manteo.

|
Learn Your Local Evacuation Routes
Evacuations are only called for when the lives and safety of those in the area being evacuated will be at risk. With Dare County's significant seasonal increases in population and limited access on and off the barrier islands, major traffic delays will occur during evacuations. For this reason, Dare County has two evacuation routes: Highway 64 West and Highway 158 North. Dare County Emergency Management encourages the use of Highway 64 West—especially for anyone evacuating from Hatteras Island, Nags Head and Roanoke Island. Highway 64 has less congestion and fewer traffic lights, allowing you to maintain a constant speed. This route may appear longer on a GPS device, but it is typically faster.

What is a Rip Current?
Rip currents are powerful, channeled currents of water flowing away from shore. They typically extend from the shoreline, through the surf zone, and past the line of breaking waves.
Certain tide conditions can increase rip currents to dangerous speeds. People get in trouble when they are moved so far offshore that they are unable to get back to the shore because of fear, panic, exhaustion or inefficient swimming skills.
Lifeguards are trained to identify these hazards. Always swim at a lifeguarded beach and ask a lifeguard about the conditions before entering the water.

Featured Video: Discover Hidden Dare - East Lake
Dare County, in partnership with Current TV, has released the latest installment in the Discover Hidden Dare video series, highlighting the mainland community of East Lake, North Carolina. Located along the shoreline of the Alligator River on the western edge of Dare County, East Lake is known for its quiet rural setting, deep ties to agriculture and fishing, and strong connection to the land and waterways that have shaped the community for generations.
The video explores East Lake’s rich history and natural beauty, from its role as a gateway to the Outer Banks when traveling along U.S. Highway 64 to its proximity to the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge, which is home to diverse wildlife and expansive pocosin wetlands, and offers numerous recreational opportunities, such as hiking and paddling. It also highlights the area’s fascinating past, including the rise and fall of nearby Buffalo City—a once-thriving lumber town that later became known during Prohibition for its moonshine production and bootlegging operations.
Today, East Lake remains a close-knit community that offers a peaceful way of life while still being just a short drive from nearby Roanoke Island and the northern Outer Banks beaches. Watch the latest Discover Hidden Dare video featuring East Lake on Dare County’s YouTube channel and learn more about one of Dare County’s unique mainland communities.

Meet Lucky!
Our Outer Banks SPCA Pet of the Week is Lucky!
This beautiful girl was found abandoned on the side of the road in an area where, sadly, dogs are often left behind and not found for weeks.
Thanks to the kindness of our community, we were able to bring Lucky to safety. Lucky was previously adopted from a Lab rescue, but when her owner moved, she was left behind. While we may never understand how anyone could do that, we're grateful she's now safe and getting the care she deserves.
Because of what she's been through, Lucky may take a little time to warm up to other dogs and can be sensitive to fast movements. But beneath that is a smart, loving girl who knows her basic commands and is ready to bond deeply with her person. Lucky would do best with an adopter who can give her patience, love, and the fresh start she truly deserves. We can't wait to see her finally experience the safe and happy life she's been waiting for.
Are you ready to meet Lucky or other adoptable pets? Stop by the Dare County Animal Shelter, located at 378 Airport Road in Manteo, and click here to watch a video produced by Current TV. For more information, please visit OBXSPCA.org or contact the Outer Banks SPCA at 252-475-5620!
Outer Banks SPCA Adoption Hours:
Monday to Friday: 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. (closed from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. for naptime)
