Freezing temperatures will continue for the next several days, keeping roads icy and making travel extremely dangerous across Dare County. Residents and visitors are urged to stay home and avoid driving unless absolutely necessary. Staying off the roads helps keep everyone safer and allows NCDOT crews and emergency responders to do their jobs more quickly and effectively.
At this time, approximately 1,100 customers throughout Dare County are without power. Utility crews are working as quickly and safely as possible to restore service. Residents are encouraged to report outages directly to their power provider.
All Dare County offices and facilities will be closed on Monday, February 2, 2026 and Tuesday, February 3, 2026. In addition, Dare County Public Works—which provides trash collection for the unincorporated areas of Dare County, as well as the Town of Kitty Hawk—has announced that both residential and commercial trash collection services scheduled for Monday, February 2, 2026 and Tuesday, February 3, 2026 have been cancelled.
Conditions will be reassessed on Tuesday afternoon, February 3, 2026 to determine whether operations can safely resume on Wednesday, February 4, 2026.
Additionally, the Dare County Board of Commissioners meeting scheduled for 9 a.m. on Monday, February 2, 2026 has been postponed and will be held at 9 a.m. on Thursday, February 12, 2026.
Dare County Emergency Management continues to urge residents and visitors to stay home and stay safe as hazardous conditions persist across the area.

Town of Duck:
The Town of Duck Administrative Offices will be closed on Monday, February 2, 2026.
Residential recycling collection for Monday, February 2, 2026 has been cancelled. Tidewater Fibre Corporation (TFC) Recycling will resume recycling collection on Monday, February 9, 2026 and Monday, February 16, 2026. Please secure recycling containers.
Residential trash collection for Monday, February 2, 2026 has been cancelled. At this time, Waste Management has rescheduled trash collection for Tuesday, February 3, 2026. Please note that this is subject to change.

Town of Southern Shores:
The Town of Southern Shores Administrative Offices will be closed on Monday, February 2, 2026.
The Southern Shores Town Council meeting (previously scheduled for Tuesday, February 3, 2026) has been rescheduled for Tuesday, February 10, 2026 at 10 a.m. in the Pitts Center. All agenda items will remain the same.
Monday trash collection has been rescheduled to Tuesday, February 3, 2026.
While the Town does not have the resources to clear streets, Public Works will focus on opening main routes for essential personnel as conditions allow.
Town of Kitty Hawk:
The Town of Kitty Hawk Administrative Offices will be closed Monday, February 2, 2026 due to the road conditions and anticipated extreme cold.
Kitty Hawk Recycling Center remains closed until further notice. No trash collection will take place Monday, February 2, 2026 or Tuesday, February 3, 2026. Trash collection rescheduling will be evaluated and advised Tuesday, February 3, 2026.
The Kitty Hawk Town Council Meeting scheduled for Monday, February 2, 2026, has been cancelled. The next Town Council meeting will take place Monday, March 2, 2026, at 5 p.m. (please note the time change).
Road conditions throughout the Town of Kitty Hawk remain dangerous due to snow, ice and extreme cold. For your safety and the safety of first responders, avoid all travel unless absolutely necessary.

Town of Kill Devil Hills:
All Town of Kill Devil Hills offices and facilities, including the Trash Drop Off/Recycle Centers, will be closed on Monday, February 2, 2026.
In addition, there will be no residential or commercial refuse collection. Once conditions improve, an alternate pickup schedule will be shared.
Beach driving remains closed.

Town of Nags Head:
All Town of Nags Head Administrative offices will be closed on Monday, February 2, 2026.
Trash collection will not take place on Monday, February 2, 2026 and Tuesday, February 3, 2026. Tidewater Fibre Corporation (TFC) Recycling will not empty curbside recycling carts on Monday, February 2, 2026.
Town of Nags Head crews will continue to plow neighborhood streets.
Town of Manteo:
All Town of Manteo Administrative offices will be closed on Monday, February 2, 2026. Residential and commercial trash collection will not occur on Monday, February 2, 2026.
Road conditions may remain hazardous for several days, so please be safe and plan accordingly.

National Park Service Closures & Cancellations
All National Park Service visitor facilities at Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Fort Raleigh National Historic Site and Wright Brothers National Memorial will remain closed through the morning of Monday, February 2, 2026.
