A Coastal Flood Advisory issued by the National Weather Service at Newport/Morehead City remains in place for Hatteras Island through 8 p.m. on Friday, October 17, 2025. Additionally, 1 to 2 feet of inundation above ground level remains possible, due to strong winds and rough seas.
Multiple roadways on Hatteras Island continue to have standing water that will persist as additional soundside flooding occurs. Dare County urges residents and visitors to exercise caution when traveling on Hatteras Island—especially around high tide cycles—until flooding subsides.

Before you drive through standing water:
-
Avoid if possible: It is always safest to turn around and wait for flooding to subside.
-
Check the depth: Never drive through water that is higher than the bottom of your wheel hubs. Even 6 inches of moving water can knock you off your feet, and 12 inches can sweep a car away.
-
Look for hazards: Water can hide hidden dangers like potholes or debris.
-
Drive slowly: If you must travel through standing water, please drive slowly to avoid damage to your vehicle and any surrounding property.
