2024 Greetings from your Dare County Librarian
This December finds us at the end of another outstanding year for our Dare County Libraries and the wonderful patrons who support us year-round.
We experienced a lot of changes this year with the introduction of new eBook and streaming apps, an expanded Library of Things collection, a few new faces at our front desks and some updated technologies in our three locations. Thanks to our generous donors, we continue to be able to offer a free community Summer Reading Program for children and adults, new furniture and fixtures, additional programs for all ages, and—the beating heart of a library—a great depth and range of reading materials in print and through our apps.
Many of you have reached out to me this past year to share your ideas, views and suggestions on how we are doing, and from these thoughtful conversations we have made adjustments, small and large, to aspects of our libraries that we hope have enhanced the experiences of all of our patrons. I encourage open communication and hope to hear from more of our community members in the coming year about the ways we might be able to grow and better serve your needs.
Our 22-member staff consists of librarians, library assistants, catalogers, children’s librarians and a bookkeeper who give their best each and every day to keep us running smoothly. Most of you know these exceptional people and their dedication to our patrons, visitors and community; I continue to be humbled by their excellence and the gift of working amongst them everyday.
Thank you, Dare County Library Newsletter readers, for your support. On behalf of the Dare County Library, I wish you all a very Happy New Year and a fortunate 2025.
Sincerely,
Meaghan Leenaarts Beasley, Dare County Librarian

 December Staff Pick:
"Air" by Monica Roe
"Air" by Monica Roe has been nominated by kids in North Carolina for the 2025 North Carolina Children’s Book Award. Kids who read at least three books from the list of nominees can vote on their favorite in March. Sorry, grownups, only kids are eligible to vote for this award, but anyone can read the excellent books on the nomination list!
"Air" tells the story of 12-year-old Em who is in 7th grade and uses a wheelchair to get around. She lives in rural South Carolina and she wants to do WCMX but needs the right wheelchair to participate. Em is on her way to achieving her goal, earning money through her online business making and selling customized book bags that can attach to a wheelchair or walker. After a wipeout on one of the school’s poorly designed ramps, it is decided that Em needs a full-time aide to help her. Instead of replacing the ramp, the school launches a public fundraiser to buy a new wheelchair for Em. How can Em show gratitude for her community but also make sure that the choices in her life are hers to make?
I wasn’t sure that I would enjoy this book when I first saw it, but Em’s courageous character grabbed my attention right from the beginning. The author is a pediatric physical therapist who really captures Em’s spirit and makes you think. It’s worth reading this book to find out how Em takes control and “stands” up for herself.

December Featured Title: "The Frozen River" by Ariel Lawhon
Maine, 1789: When the Kennebec River freezes, entombing a man in the ice, Martha Ballard is summoned to examine the body and determine cause of death. As a midwife and healer, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town's most respected gentlemen--one of whom has now been found dead in the ice. But when a local physician undermines her conclusion, declaring the death to be an accident, Martha is forced to investigate the shocking murder on her own.
Over the course of one winter, as the trial nears and whispers and prejudices mount, Martha doggedly pursues the truth. Her diary soon lands at the center of the scandal, implicating those she loves and compelling Martha to decide where her own loyalties lie.
Clever, layered and subversive, Ariel Lawhon's newest offering introduces an unsung heroine who refused to accept anything less than justice at a time when women were considered best seen and not heard. "The Frozen River" is a thrilling, tense and tender story about a remarkable woman who left an unparalleled legacy yet remains nearly forgotten to this day.
