In celebration of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Day, which will take place on Wednesday, November 15, 2023, Dare County GIS has created the “OBX Unscripted: A Pop Culture Journey” interactive map that gives users an opportunity to explore various locations along the Outer Banks that have appeared in movies, music, books and television.
“Whether it's something you have heard, someone you know, somewhere you have eaten or something you have seen, splashes of the Outer Banks can be seen throughout pop culture—and you’ll find many of them included on this interactive map,” said Dare County GIS Analyst Kristen Stilson, who created the map for GIS Day 2023.
From Netflix’s “Outer Banks” and National Geographic’s “Wicked Tuna” to Scotty McCreery’s “Feelin' It,” Brad Paisley’s “Waitin’ on a Woman” and Mary Kay Andrews’ “Summer Rental,” work from a wide array of famous actors, musicians and authors is highlighted on the map along with detailed background information and several fun facts about each item.
In addition to several big names in show business—such as Christopher Walken, Richard Gere and Andy Griffith—the map also features the work of some new and less familiar names—such as Tyler Nilson, writer and director of “The Peanut Butter Falcon”—who are already making their mark on pop culture.
Whether it is a quick reference in a film, a music video that was shot here or a show that’s based entirely on beautiful Dare County, this map features something for everyone to enjoy. To view the OBX Unscripted interactive map, please click the button below.
About GIS
GIS is a system that allows users to create, manage, analyze, map and visualize the world around us by connecting the “what” with the “where.” GIS also allows people to more easily identify patterns, relationships and geographic context in order to better influence decision-making, increase efficiency and improve communication.
