Despite the chilly months and the fact that we're not in "planting season," the Dare County Library's Seed Library continues to have "check-outs" almost every day. In addition, members of the Dare County community have kindly been donating lots of seeds back to the Dare County Library - most of which are Outer Banks-hardy.
We're adding inventory this month based on demand and requests. Make sure you're ready for spring by checking out our guide below or stopping by to visit our seed libraries at the Kill Devil Hills Library, Manteo Library and Hatteras Library!

"We Are the Light" by Matthew Quick
"I picked up this book on a whim (I had never read Matthew Quick) and am glad I did! It was not only charming with touches of humor but also thought-provoking. Each character was, if not likeable, entirely interesting. This includes the two characters that we never “physically” meet! The story is built on a troubled soul and a shattered community and how they are both healed and heal others. Although it had me guessing until the last few pages, the ending was more than satisfying!"

New AWE Learning Stations in the Children's Departments
The Dare County Library now has award-winning AWE Learning Stations at each of our three library locations. Funded through the generosity of the Dare County Board of Commissioners and the Dare County Library Foundation, these six new computers for children are loaded with educational software.
The computers are self-contained, without an internet connection, and provide access to a wide variety of award-winning learning software in English and Spanish. Computer use is available on a first-come, first-served basis, and sessions last for 30 minutes. A library card is not required in order to use them.
The early literacy software is designed specifically for our youngest patrons and features hundreds of learning activities. The computers come with a wide array of bilingual English-Spanish software and the Afterschool Edge, a package of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and STREAM (Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) software intended for children up to age 12.
The next time your youngster is at the library, be sure to check out our new AWE Learning Stations full of fun, interactive and engaging educational content.

Refurbished Service Desk at the Manteo Library
Over the past few years, Dare County has invested a significant amount of funds toward several renovations and improvements to the Manteo Library, our oldest facility. New interior paint, all-new carpeting and brand-new LED lighting have been installed. Additionally, a wall was removed and the public restroom was renovated and doubled in size.
Previously, Dare County had purchased new desks and task chairs for all staff members. We appreciate the generosity of the Dare County Board of Commissioners in funding these needed renovations. The final item on this list of renovations was to replace or refurbish our 50-plus-year-old main service desk. The Dare County Library Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that supports all three Dare County Library locations, funded a refurbishment of what had become a worn-out focal point of this facility. Over the last 10 years, through the generosity of people like you, the Dare County Library Foundation has been able to put over $60,000 into library programs, collections and services.
The Dare County Library Foundation provides significant annual support of our Summer Reading Program, and this year the organization provided startup funding for our new library book clubs and for our Seed Library Program. Please consider making a tax-deductible contribution in any amount to the Dare County Library Foundation. You may drop your donation off at any Dare County Library location or send a check to the Dare County Library Foundation, P.O. Box 1000, Manteo, N.C. 27954. Your gift to the Dare County Library Foundation is a gift to everyone in the community!

Through the generosity of the Manteo Rotary Club, the Manteo Library now has a greatly expanded collection of bilingual and Spanish language books for children.
This donation of $1,495 allowed the library to purchase 110 books and more than 50 Spanish language and bilingual titles for children that are available as eBooks on the Cloud Library.
Over the past few years, the library has attempted to provide a small number of quality bilingual materials for children who are enrolled in the local school system’s dual language program. With this substantial donation, we have been able to greatly expand the scope and breadth of our bilingual children’s materials in order to better support the dual language students. Additionally, this collection will allow us to better serve our significant Hispanic population where English may not be the primary language spoken in the home. In the new year, we hope to expand our youth programming at the Manteo Library to include a bilingual component.
These titles, like all circulating materials owned by the Manteo Library, may be requested and sent to any of the libraries in our system by our free and convenient courier service. For more information about the Manteo Rotary Club, visit https://www.facebook.com/manteo.rotary.club.
