Park & Recreation Opens County’s First DIRTway

Hiking is getting more challenging in Mecklenburg County.

Mecklenburg County's first DIRTway is now open along Walker Branch in southwest Mecklenburg County. DIRTways are unpaved, rugged temporary trails.

Hikers cross creeks, ditches, and wetlands over flat stones, concrete pads, or small wooden platforms called bogboards

The Walker Branch DIRTway is slightly over a half mile long and connects to the current paved greenway trail at RiverGate to Smith Road.

An additional DIRTway is planned along the greenway at McDowell Creek west of Torrence Creek Greenway.

Mecklenburg County has 37 miles of developed greenway trails. You can learn more at Mecklenburg County Greenways and Mecklenburg County DIRTways
