CROSS CHARLOTTE TRAIL UPDATE

On July 8, Charlotte City Council approved the construction contract for the Brandywine-to-Tyvola segment of the Cross Charlotte Trail. This segment will provide a critical connection between existing segments of the Little Sugar Creek Greenway -- one behind Park Road Shopping Center continuing northward to 7th Street, and the other one at Tyvola Road continuing southward to I-485. Construction for this segment is expected to start in the fall and will take approximately two years to complete.

The City has installed wayfinding signs along Park Road, Selwyn Avenue and neighborhood streets that provide an on-street connection between existing greenways along Little Sugar Creek. This route will give greenway users a bike route to the nearest trailhead in both the short and long term and will prove useful during construction of the Brandywine-to-Tyvola segment. Below is a map of the on-street greenway-to-greenway connection.

The Charlotte Department of Transportation's Street Maintenance Division has also modified the neighborhood entrance at Buckingham Drive to provide greater access. The gap in the guardrail has been widened, and a short asphalt connection was added to the natural trail surface to control erosion and provide a smoother connection for pedestrians and bicyclists.

The City is also working with Mecklenburg County Park & Recreation to install terminal signs at each end of the new segment that will display a map of the on-street greenway-to-greenway connection that will be in place until construction is complete.
