ASSESSOR’S OFFICE UPDATES PROGRESS OF
2011 REVALUATION APPEALS
Charlotte, NC – The Mecklenburg County Tax Assessor’s Office has completed nearly two-thirds of the informal appeals from property owners seeking an adjustment to their new property values and has decided more than 2,800 of the formal appeals. All County properties were reappraised this year as part of the State-mandated revaluation to equalize the market value and tax value of properties at least every eight years. Numbers are as of November 30.
Totals for informal appeals:
- · Total appeals = 35,917
- · Total cases closed = 23,093
- · Total appeals reduced = 4,754
- · Total value of reduction = ($224,394,253)

- · Net value change = ($211,119,608)

The citizen board appointed to hear formal appeals, the Board of Equalization and Review, meets three days a week, hearing about 75 cases per session. The Board will continue its work until all formal appeals are decided sometime next spring.
Tax bills based on the new values are due now even if an appeal is not yet closed. The County will reconcile with property owners whose appeals result in a reduction of their property value/tax bill including interest on the amount overpaid. Bills not paid on or before January 5, 2012 are subject to two percent interest for January and an additional three-quarters percent each month after that. Property owners with a question about their bill are encouraged to call 311 if calling from within Mecklenburg County or 704-336-4600 if calling from outside the County.
