UNC Charlotte College of Arts and Architecture’s Tactical Urbanism Class has partnered with CDOT to decorate the crosswalks and adjacent sidewalks with chalk in the vicinity of the UNC Charlotte Center City campus.
On Friday, May 5, Brevard Street at 11th Street and 9th Street at College Street will close at 10 a.m. and remain closed for several hours.
During this time, UNC Charlotte students will decorate the crosswalks and adjacent sidewalks to provoke conversation and promote urban vitality in the educational core that surrounds UNC Charlotte’s Center City campus and First Ward Park. The work will continue the discussion started by Janette Sadik-Khan, New York City’s former Transportation Commissioner, when she visited Charlotte in early April. She advocated for streets that are safer and more engaging for pedestrians and cyclists, less dominated by automobiles, and suggested the use of temporary pilot projects as a way to begin that change. Students will decorate 1,000 feet of sidewalks using ecologically-themed elements, linking First Ward Park to the adjoining elementary schools.

recycling receptacles on the buffer zone at the edge of the bicycle lane on
