Kudos to Community Police Academy Participants
The Guardians of the Hill hosted another successful Community Police Academy, offering hands-on learning and skill-building to session participants. From learning how to "lift" fingerprints and talk on a police radio to investigating mock crime scenes and gathering clues, our participants got to see what the department's day-to-day operations are like and solve a mock crime of their own. Stay tuned for our next Academy in fall 2026 - it's open to all whether you live in Chapel Hill or not, and we have interpreters for people who speak languages other than English.

Legion Property Update
The State is reviewing our permit applications for removing the pond, dam, and trees that are along the pond. We expect this construction to begin this summer. This current phase of the project includes a wildlife assessment.
Representative Valerie Foushee (D-NC-04) recently announced $2,000,000 in funding for the affordable housing development planned for the Legion Road property. The developer still expects to apply for Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) funding in 2027.

We’re seeking Triangle-based artists who love music and can translate rhythm, lyricism, and flow into bold visual artwork for the exterior of a Chapel Hill Transit bus. Open to artists 18+ who live within 40 miles of Chapel Hill. Finalist stipends are $400, and project stipend is $2,500. Apply by March 24 at 5pm.

Home Electrical Hazard Safety
Faulty wiring, faulty appliances, and overloaded circuits are all hazards that can lead to an electrical fire. Flickering lights, frequently blown fuses or tripped circuit breakers, discolored outlets, and a burning smell or buzzing sound can all be signs of an electrical issue. What should you do?
- As always, have working smoke detectors in your home.
- Stop using the appliance or outlet immediately.
- Turn the appliance or device off, unplug it, or turn off the outlet at the breaker if you can do so safely.
- Go outside and call 911 if you smell smoke, see fire, or the issue continues.
Here are some ways that you can help prevent electrical fires:
- Plug major appliances directly into a wall outlet.
- Stay at home while using heat-producing appliances such as your dryer, dishwasher, stove, and oven.
- Don't overload outlets or power strips.
