Chapel Hill Police investigators are working to identify and charge people who have been breaking into vehicles in the northeast part of town. Investigators are also asking all community members to take steps to protect their property.
“We have a team of investigators looking into 21 reports of vehicle break-ins this month and we’re increasing patrols in the area,” said Police Chief Celisa Lehew. “This behavior is unacceptable. We will investigate and we will file charges.”
Most of the vehicle break-ins have happened at two hotels along Fordham Boulevard. Thieves have also targeted apartment and businesses parking lots along the road. Nearby, officers are looking into vehicle break-ins at a church, an apartment complex, and two homes in the area of Weaver Dairy Road.
The Police Department’s Community Services Unit is reminding community members to take these steps:
- Always lock your vehicle, even if you just step away for a few minutes
- Take valuables with you or keep them completely out of sight
- Park in well-lit, visible areas
- At home, motion-activated lighting and cameras can make a difference
“As we continue to investigate these crimes, it’s important that we all look out for each other. Share these tips with your loved ones, friends, and neighbors,” said Chief Lehew. “And if you see someone breaking into vehicles, call 911 immediately and do not approach them.”
