Cook with Safety in Mind
On Thanksgiving, 80% of structure fires and 40% of injuries are caused by cooking. To reduce your risk during this holiday season, keep these safety tips in mind:
- Don't leave food unattended while you're cooking (it's the leading cause of Thanksgiving day fires)
- Keep kids at least three feet away from the stove.
- Turn pot handles inward.
- Make sure your smoke detectors are working.
- Know how to extinguish a fire safely:
- If food is inside the microwave or oven, keep the door shut and turn off the heat
- Smother a grease fire - don't use water.
- If you use a fire extinguisher, remember to PASS: Pull the pin. Aim at the base of the fire. Squeeze the handle. Sweep back and forth at the base of the fire.
- Even if the fire is out, call 911 immediately.
